Gene Pool Artist Residency, Art Gene
Deadline: 15 May 2017 at 17:00
Art Gene are searching for 2 reactive visual artists for an intensive week /10 day residency, early August.
Selected artists will produce work for display within our Main Gallery: their work(s) becoming a significant part of an ongoing and evolving group exhibition on display throughout numerous events over subsequent months. (Performance artists are welcome to apply too - just consider documentation).
Selected artists will have a guided introduction to the social, natural and built environment of Barrow-in-Furness, with reference to our programme of projects that currently includes Allotment Soup - a field-sized exploration of community growing, and our forthcoming project Extreme Landscapes - where we will be testing ways of maximising community engagement with the spectacular local coast.
It is hoped that selected artists will (loosely) engage with one of these (or other current projects - see our website) thematically through their practice and/or by giving an artist talk to groups that we work with. They may also chose to interact with pre-existing elements of the exhibition or explore the architecture of our Grade 2 listed building.
This residency is intended for early/mid career artists as an opportunity to explore new ways of working / develop practices and react sponteneously to people and place. (It is not intended to support the fabrication of pre-conceived work).
Our intention is that both artists will benefit/enjoy working alongside each other. Our artist founders, residency programme curator (and potentially other project artists) will also be on hand to offer support and friendship, facilitate the production of work - and profit from this environment of intense creativity.
Residency artists will have access to our tools and large, well-furnished workshop (but supply their own materials).
Artist Fee: £1000
Travel and accommodation will be paid up to a budget of £500.
To apply, please send:
- Up to 8 jpg images (max size 800kb) and/or up to 5 links to audio/video work online (include an explanatory image list if need be).
- Artist statement.
- (up to ) 500 words describing how your practice complements (any aspect) of Art Gene’s own research remit exploring the Social, Natural and Built environment through excellent art, design and artist/expert-led community projects.
The deadline is Monday 15 May 2017 at 17:00.
