MUSICAL DIRECTOR for this workshop will be SHERYL MONKELIEN, Professor of Music Education and Director of Vocal Jazz and Music Theatre at Mansfield University, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Monkelien received degrees from Iowa State University (BME) and the University of Nebraska (MM and PhD), and studied jazz for two years at the Phil Mattson School of Music in Spokane, Washington.

Sheryl is an experienced jazz singer, conductor and clinician and has been delivering vocal jazz workshops for choral educators for the past twenty years throughout the United States.

Her vocal jazz ensembles have performed at numerous festivals, state and regional, national and international conferences including the Tenth Annual Vocal Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall with guest conductor Phil Mattson (2006); the World Choir Games in Graz, Austria (2008) where they were named World Champions in the Jazz Vocal A Capella category; the Eastern Division ACDA Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2010); the ACDA National Conference in Dallas, Texas (2013) and the New York City Jazz Festival at the Apollo Theatre (2015).

The Art of Vocal Jazz: explore vocal jazz and experience factors that make artistic ensemble and solo singing possible – jazz style.

Vocal Jazz Literature: sing, rehearse and perform vocal jazz ensemble and solo literature.

Efficient and Educational Rehearsals: Improve conducting and rehearsal technique of participating educators by giving directors a chance to do something new and different from what they did in college. Rehearsal efficiency and problems directors encounter in the rehearsal will be discussed along with strategies for better rehearsals.

Solo Jazz Performance: Standards – the songs of Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlin, Kern, Porter, Jobim, Mercer, Carmichael and others are the foundation of jazz literature. Learning and performing this literature in an encouraging environment.

Vocal Improvisation – Scat singing: practice in improvisation and methods of teaching creativity.

Jazz Theory: looking at jazz theory, chords.

This 2-day workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th June 2017 from 10 am till 5pm, in the City of Music Studio, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
